Human Rights Concerns
In 2009, Amnesty International launched a campaign to demand justice for the disappeared in Cape Verde and nine other countries. Governments use enforced disappearance as a tool of repression to silence dissent and eliminate political opposition, as well as to persecute ethnic, religious and political groups.
The UN International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance recognizes the families' rights to know the truth about the fate of a disappeared person and to obtain reparations.
Every year during International Day of the Disappeared, we remember the disappeared and demands justice for victims of enforced disappearances.

Amnesty International State of the World 2015-2016
International protection of human rights is in danger of unravelling as short-term national self-interest and draconian security crackdowns have led to a wholesale assault on basic freedoms and rights, warned Amnesty International as it launched its annual assessment of human rights around the world. “Your rights are in jeopardy: they are being treated with utter contempt by many governments around the world,” said Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International.
